March 18th
After having breakfast on a rainy day in Urbino, we visited ITIS Urbino vocational high school as it was the first day of activities on the project calendar. The school impressed us right from the entrance as we passed by numerous devices and antique vehicles with old technology. We took a picture at the Erasmus corner. Then, we proceeded to the classroom where the meetings and presentations for the project would take place. Since it was the first day, brief information about the project schedule and the school was given. Afterwards, we started touring the school. It was the end of our time at the project, we discussed what we needed to do during this period when we would be together for the last time and then left the school.
On March 19th, the second day of the schedule, we went to the school and participated in activities in the electronics, software, and automation workshops. In the electronics workshop, we worked with Italian students to create an LED triggered by an LDR sensor using Arduino. We had the opportunity to examine the system that allows everyone in their school to access statistics such as data transfer, energy storage, and usage.
In the next workshop, the Automation workshop, we saw an autonomous system they had created using discarded electronic materials from local companies. This system sorts and classifies objects on a conveyor belt and processes them as needed. We also had the opportunity to examine a multi-axis robotic arm in their classroom, which can be controlled via a tablet and has a carrying capacity of up to 3 kilograms.
Then we proceeded to the software workshop and were surprised by the surprise that greeted us in the corridor where the workshop was located. Using image processing technology through a webcam, we could see the count of objects and people in the corridor. In this workshop, we joined the Italian students in their work on developing an application for the Android platform to be used in the school's presidential elections.
When we returned to our project classroom, we participated in a video conference presentation by Luca from the Centro di Coordinamento RAEE company, which discussed the evolution of telephones. After this presentation, Luca talked about the electronic waste collected by the RAEE company across Italy and the benefits of obtaining metals used in technologies such as chip production without causing environmental harm. Following all these presentations, we had a Kahoot! quiz.
On March 20th, we went directly from the hotel to the city of Pesaro. In Pesaro, we visited a workshop that could be described as a repurposing workshop, where we saw both artistic and functional products made from sorted waste materials. We then formed three groups to enhance student interactions and to see how they could use waste materials to create functional products. To make the task a bit more challenging, each group was allowed to choose only one material: cardboard, plastic, or wood. After some time, the groups presented their products, compared them, and provided feedback to each other.
Afterwards, we visited La Saporiana, a cosmetics company in Pesaro. There, we were given a presentation about the company's history and its commitment to nature. Then, we participated in the process of creating moisturizing cream using entirely eco-friendly materials. At the end of the activity, they gifted us the creams we had made ourselves.
On March 21st, after meeting at the school, we visited the Urbino municipality. Here, we learned a lot about Urbino and its history, and we were impressed by Urbino's protection by UNESCO. We also learned about the efforts and various initiatives to promote Urbino. After our visit to the municipality, we made a short visit to the city's largest church.
Afterwards, we visited a museum where we could learn more about the city. During this visit, we observed and heard from our guide about the city's history, famous figures originating from Urbino, the geometric shapes developed there, and the importance placed on mathematics.
When we returned to the school, we participated in an activity in the Chemistry laboratory with the students and the chemistry teacher. The activity focused on measuring the pH values of liquids and examining the effects of acidity and alkalinity.
On our last day, in the morning, we went to school to review the tasks and progress assigned to each group since the project was coming to an end. We shared our thoughts on the handbook we were going to create and received certificates of participation in the Italy leg of the project from the school principal. Afterwards, we visited the palace of Federico da Montefeltro, the founder of Urbino, where we learned more about Urbino's history and explored the art exhibitions with a guide.
